Rachael Berman-Harris
40’s, strawberry blond, white Chef jacket embroidered with ‘Owner/Chef’ Sweet Bytes Bakery. A business owner, wife, and mother of two, Rachael took over her mother's floundering bakery that she built to try to save the family business legacy . She is positive and upbeat by nature and fiercely supportive of her work and home families. Never without a witty remark, Rachael’s conversations are always laced with comedic overture and her, I’m Never Done! theme, is the antithesis of her approach to life. Rachael always puts others before herself, her children, husband, mother and uncle at home, and her employees at work. She’s a problem solver by nature and everyone looks to her for help. She has a difficult time saying no and tends to take on multiple issues that, at times, tests her capacity. She is reluctant to stand up for herself and delegate tasks to others, she’d rather charge forward and get things done herself.
Brad Harris
40’s, building contractor, Rachael’s husband. He was a Major League Baseball player. In his first game after being called up from the Minor Leagues, he drilled a line drive single off the right field wall, then tried to stretch it into a double and blew out his knee sliding into third base. It was a career ending injury. After leaving baseball he started a construction business. When one day, on a lunch break he met Rachael and her mother selling cookies and brownies at a local farmer’s market. He fell in love at first site and first bite. Not one to sit still for long Brad is not only a building contractor by trade, but he is also an avid gardener who is curious about everything, with a willingness to jump in and try anything. One week he’s a growing cannabis and the next he’s studying to become a Rabbi, and he’s not Jewish. He likes to be in control but knows when to yield to Rachael, especially when dealing with the kids. He lives by the creed, happy wife, happy life. He’s a great dad, loves his kids and would do anything for them. And due to Rachael’s very early morning schedule and his flexible schedule, he does the essentials for the kids, i.e., breakfast, lunches, rides to school, volunteering at the school and playdates. But he’s also a guys’ guy, loves sports, uses sports metaphors, even when not appropriate. He has his construction crew that idealizes him as a hero because of his brief Major League Baseball debut.
Alice Berman
Rachael’s mother, 60s, dressed in a hippy hemp robe. Alice is a Baby Boomer, a hold-over hippy and stoner from the sixties. She is always willing to stand up and fight for a good cause, the environment, human rights, women’s rights, or animal rights, she’s never met a protest she didn’t like. Alice has a close nit group of women friends that she is constantly plotting with, looking for the next protest or because they can get behind. She lost her husband Nathan, Uncle Allan’s brother, when Rachael was very young and although she never remarried, she secretly hopes to find another husband one day. Alice lives alone and manages to handle that well most of the time, but has her moments where she is absent minded, maybe it’s from all the pot she’s smoked/smokes, but she habitually locks herself out of her house and hangs out with people that her family and friends think are not desirable, i.e., Pat, the owner of the local head shop. Alice constantly engages Rachael in emotional gymnastics and gets herself into situations where Rachael is forced to rescue her or support her protests by baking cookies. And Alice feels slighted if she doesn’t get the attention, she thinks she deserves.
Uncle Allan Berman
Rachael’s Uncle, 60s, dressed as Elvis, planning his singing career comeback special. He is an older Baby Boomer that feels life is his stage and he always dresses and acts the part. He’s quirky and funny but a chronic complainer and offers his “Expert advice” on everything to anyone. As a younger man, he was a talented singer-songwriter and impersonated some of the most iconic singers of our time, and his idols, Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly and Ricky Nelson. His singing career cost him his first two marriages, because he was so driven, always on the road performing in concert, in a different city every night. He finally retired after several decades after being on the road most of his life. After all the years of touring he was able to scrape together enough money to buy a small home. He stopped traveling and settled down, but still performed at local night clubs and bars to make a few bucks. That’s when he met his third wife who made him quit singing all together. Still a passionate artist he picked up a paint brush and discovered he had a natural talent for painting portraits. So instead of impersonating his idols he painted them and earned a pretty good living selling them at the local Farmer’s Market. He did that until his third wife left him and he lost his home in the divorce. Finding himself homeless and on a very limited budget, he moved in with the Rachael and her family. Uncle Allan is in good physical and mental condition but has become obsessed with WebMD, convinced he has every problem he reads about. Longing for his days of glory, and still trying to make a buck, he has recently launched an effort to revive his show biz career by giving a concert to honor his idols.
Stacy Berman-Harris
Rachael & Brad’s seven-year-old daughter. A cute very dramatic drama queen with an attitude. She follows in her mother’s comedy footsteps and is quick witted. Very outgoing, Stacy lives for and on social media, posting her latest thoughts and dance moves on TikTok. She rules the playground at school and all her friends look to her as the trendsetter. A leader not a follower, she does not trend quietly.
Daniel Berman-Harris
Rachael & Brad’s ten-year-old son. He is very athletic and competitive, excelling in baseball, like his father, ice hockey and football. He is a natural born leader and the captain of every team he’s on. Wise beyond his years due to his extensive social media engagement. Daniel will try just about anything and is someone his friends look up to as a leader. He has also picked up some of his mom’s biting humor, cynicism and snarky remarks, which seems to be a natural family dynamic.
Pugly Berman-Harris
The Berman family dog, a very old pug-nose, trained emotional therapy dog, that always wears an official vest. Baby Boomer, in dog years, on his last legs, hanging on by a thread. He makes an unusual wheezing sound when he breaths. He is fragile, lovable and clings to life. Pugly is known as the Berman Baby Yoda and seems to make magic happen when he’s around.
Jenny Whitfield
30s, African American, Head Pastry Chef at Sweet Bytes Bakery and Rachael’s right hand. Gen X, with natural business prowess and financial expertise. She has a practical approach to life, baking and business. She is hound-dog loyal, does staff scheduling, ordering supplies and takes orders from customers. She keeps the staff on their toes and would do anything for Rachael and the business. Always looking to be creative in the kitchen and encouraging others to do the same. She is super strict on process, following recipes, training, and watching overhead costs. Jenny provides a good counterbalance to some of the joviality in the kitchen due to her calm nature and being cool and collective under pressure personality.
